Trans-Pyrenees Offroad September 16th-29th 2000

Pix and some words about my offroad trip across the Pyrenees at the end of September 2000.

This was a trip organized by Steve Fagioli (FTE).

And our guide/local expert was Mick of Pyrenean 4x4 Adventures

This line up was after we'd made the 2 hour trip from the ferry port in Bilbao

It didn't take us long to find a something to photograph

Have a quick break at the top of a minor hill

The next day we went for something a little more adventurous plus we had some pretty heavy rain to contend with

What it did do was make some trivial grass slopes "interesting"

Shortly after this I found myself halfway down the hell as the anchor point between two winches

Luckily the weather improved for lunch

An excellent excuse for lunch at the border (spain/france)

Later that day the hills started to get breathtaking

Which involved a break of course

Followed by a quick jaunt along a dry river bed

End of the second day just before a mad dash (over 46 miles of mountains) we stop at sunset at about 5500 feet

Our first sighting of snow (later when we got to the snow line we found it

Me looking impressed at the view

Pausing for breath

Just a quick snap along the way

Steve shows off his legs

And his half-doors

And winch

Another first shot of snow covered peaks

But not the last

Of course not everything had snow on it

Interesting little route through a very deep gully, also proved to be a good carwash as well.

As well as a good spot for a couple of photos

Although to be honest it really wasn't that great a carwash!.

But then the view more than made up for it

A little higher

And higher passed the ski resort and slopes

Finally at the top we have lunch (7500 feet)

The way down is "interesting" to say the least

But not as much as -

The way "across" was

The old girl is starting to look like she's just driven 400 miles offroad (cos she has)

And used to dry off wet boots...

A cute little shot of a tiny little spanish mountain village

A little closer

Pix of Phil (Landie) and Steve (TJ) on the trail

Pretty little picture as we pass over a cloud (Wasn't much fun driving through the bugger in the dark I can tell you)

This was the view from my hotel window around about day 4

Overhead shot of Le Pratts

Making the final push towards the Med. we spend a couple of hours driving across a very hot and dusty military artillery range

Which might be described as fun

It also paid to watch out where you stick your wheels

Or where you wash them

As this picture I took after becoming a little intimate with a tree shows

Steve waving at me for some reason

Mick giving me the "Please drive over me" hand signal

But of course

I missed Mick!

Which must be why everyone decided to attack my Jeep

Odd that the sign warning of instant death by "unexploded projectiles" was on our route out!

Landie showing some articulation?

Jeep showing some articulation?

We seemed to drive down a lot of mountains and through tiny little spanish villages

Its hard to show quite how narrow these streets are but I dare say you get the idea

This was the "Hill" which exists in a bizarre looking area of burned out hills

Very odd looking

Having made it to the Med. we all had to drink and dance/swim (Except for Steve who won't dance!)

Just mucking around at lunchtime

Pretty tame mountain roads, I swear that after two days you didn't even think around going round them at 30 mph

Quick stop to wash the mud and dust from the Jeep

I was amazed to discover that they have something called sunrise in spain and france, quite pretty really

My now clean vehicle before heading back to Bilbao

Other stuff

I was surprised how little the engine performance was effected by altitude but then again I was very surprised how quickly my air filter clogged with dust. Be prepared and either take spare air-fliters or use a K&N filter with a recharge kit.

Spanish fuel was about 40p a litre for unleaded so my Jeep was about 25 quid a tank (300 miles)

An evening out quaffing the local "vino tinto" for 7 might cost you 6/7 quid.

Lunch for two would on average cost us 2 quid.
